Earthquake!

February 28, 2001

Answers to today’s top questions:

  • Yes, I felt it.
  • We’re all OK, no damage to the house or anything broken. Some stuff fell down in the shower.
  • It was kind of scary, but not terrifying. It felt a lot like the ‘89 quake in SF—a long rolling motion that lasted about 45 seconds.
  • Yes, we do get earthquakes up here fairly often, about the same as Northern California. We’re a part of the Ring of Fire too.

Thanks for checking, though. It’s always good to know you care.

Biology of truth

February 28, 2001

Interesting essays about the difference between “truth” and “the truth”. I’d never considered the biology or math behind our ideas of truth like this piece does (scroll down a bit), but have spent a lot of time pondering it along these lines. I think any attempt to find “the truth” in the realm of human relationship is a failed one, and often a miserable process. But if I tell my truth in love and you do the same, we have an opportunity, even if there is some pain involved, to move past the pain into understanding. Zen master

February 27, 2001

I’ve been a Zen master all along! Oh sure, now there’s a kit, but I’ve been carefully growing and tending Bonsai Potatoes for years! [via Cruel Site of the Day]

Contest winner!

February 27, 2001

Well, no one guessed correctly about my Ebay bids from 2 weeks ago, so I’ll spill the beans: I bid on the Bangles EP and a mint copy of Buckingham Nicks, and lost both bids. Fortunately, I’ve found the Bangles stuff on Napster, and there are several more Buckingham Nicks LPs open still. For those [...]

Businessspeak

February 27, 2001

I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry about this one. I could bemoan the influence of business-speak on the English language for several hours, but this says it better by demonstration than any comment I might make: The Gettysburg Powerpoint Presentation. [via

Gay friend

February 27, 2001

Hee hee! The Onion continues to amaze me. Every week, they have at least one (and usually several stories) that make me chuckle out loud. This one cut a little close to home (as I have had and been this person in my life), but I’m now wiping water off my monitor: Supportive Gay Friend [...]

On the moors

February 23, 2001

Well, for the two or three of you still reading, I’m back. February has turned out to be a slow month, post-wise—I guess you could consider it a hibernation of sorts. Today is foggy, overcast, and cold, and I expect to see Heathcliff and Catherine wandering around on the moors any minute now. The weekend [...]

On the road again

February 15, 2001

Packing off to the Bay Area again…time for a late Valentine’s Day, a weekend road trip, and a baby shower at work—it promises to be a fun week or so. And none too soon, either. From what I hear, we’re due for big snow up here this weekend, and while it would be fun to [...]

Guess my bid

February 13, 2001

From the Late to the Party Dept.: Just recently it occurred to me that I might be able to find a couple of old albums I wanted on eBay. I’m not sure why it took so long for that thought to bubble up the top of my brain—I’ve been signed up there for over a [...]
