The Power of Kindness

January 26, 2006

I could go on about this topic for a long time, how much the little kindnesses especially can have a huge effect in people’s lives. But then someone else goes ahead and says it so much better. If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a human so far, it’s to try and make the time for small, thoughful gestures rather than saving up for the big ones. They’re usually much more meaningful, and looking for opportunities to make them is a great way to learn how to listen to other people.

Work in progress

January 25, 2006

Greetings, faithful and patient readers. The site has undergone a major hiccup in the last few weeks—I switched servers and upgraded my hosting account, and in the process totally hosed the BerkeleyDB that held all of my blog entries. Thanks to the fine support folks at Hurricane Electric, I was able to rescue the entries from the old server, re-install, and re-import into a spanking new mySQL database which will hopefully be more stable. Never a dull moment around here…

It looks like links are mostly working, but the stylesheets are a bit weird still, and of course I have grand plans for a redesign given the innate dullness of the default templates. Still, it’s a relief to find that 5 years of my online life aren’t irretrievably lost. They may not be the most profund words, but they’re mine, and I want to hold onto them.
