Bawling like a baby

December 20, 2009

I want to be able to tell a story like this one. It’s simple and short, but it has such depth of spirit. In our culture it’s rare to think of death as beautiful; loss is framed for us as something inevitably tragic and to be avoided. And it’s true that the pain of loss is inevitable, but it’s not the only truth present. The fact of mortality makes love and life all the more precious, and something to be deeply savored. This video is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen all year, precisely because it walks the line between the love and pain that are present when a loved one dies. I cried all the way through, for his losses and for mine.

Happy birthday Mom, I still miss you (and I know you would have cried too).

Best explanation so far for Fox News

May 9, 2009

Glenn Beck is a ChatBot? Great tongue-in-cheek piece about how the level of discourse and dog-whistling in right-wing media has descended to a level where it might be duplicable by a computer.

I <heart> chickens

May 8, 2009

So adorable…it’s impossible to get anything productive done at home these days thanks to our new arrivals:

We’re in the process of building a coop (they will be inside for a few months until they’re big enough), and in the meantime it’s Chicken TV all the time. Weekly updates at the YouTube channel as time warrants.

Another New One

January 1, 2006

Happy New year, all three of you! It’s 2am and I doubt I have enough energy to do the full-year summary at the moment, but in a spirit of gratitude I’d like to at least say thanks for the following things in 2005. Maybe I’ll get to the wrapup after some sweet-potato hash and coffee [...]

Holocaust Memorial – George Segal

Originally uploaded by rakuista.

This day looks a lot gloomier than it actually was— the photo was taken on that rarest of occasions, a sunny weekend afternoon at Land’s End in SF. It fits the photo, though. It was heavy, yet hopeful, to go from this memorial to the Peace memorial [...]

Fire Dance

Originally uploaded by rakuista.

At the end of our Solstice celebration, one of the farm’s former interns did a brief fire dance (or poi) performance that was really stunning. Poi is one of those many things on my list of things to learn how to do some day. Video coming soon— I managed to capture [...]

Seattle Skyline Sunset

Originally uploaded by rakuista.

A test of my new Flickr functionality. I had planned originally to set up a separate blog for photos, called WanderingEye, and I might do that someday, but for right now this is much, much simpler. And since I’m completely addicted to Flickr, a great timesaver as well.

Casting the Net

January 21, 2002

Well, I’m entering my fourth official week of unemployment…I have to say that all things considered, it hasn’t been too awful. I’ve met a lot of people through various Digital Eve events in the last week, and the camaraderie has been outstanding. Lots of good tips on looking for work, leads, advice, and good conversation. [...]
